New Look for the New Year – A Modern Eclectic Living Room Refresh
It’s a new year…so it’s time for a new look!! How many of you are clearing out, cleaning out and wanting a fresh start with your decor? ME, ME, ME!! I did a Living Room refresh with one of my favorite stores, Bed Bath & Beyond!! What? You didn’t know they had furniture? Well, don’t feel bad I didn’t either, but now I do and I can’t wait to show you what I did!
It all started when I got this catalog in the mail. It was beautiful! When I saw it was from Bed Bath & Beyond, I was shocked. I had no idea they sold furniture, decor accessories and pretty much everything for the home! Sign up for your own copy of future catalogs here!
Proud to say this post is sponsored by Bed Bath & Beyond. All ideas and opinions are my own.
Like many of you, our Living Room or Family Room is the most loved room in the house next to the kitchen. 😉 So I started thinking about how I wanted to change it up. We have a large low profile leather sectional and we love it…so that had to stay! I also had a couple of mismatched accent chairs in the space. Though they were beautiful and stylish, I wanted a more cohesive, spacious look with a touch of modern and vintage decor…because that’s what I love!
You can see photos of what the Living Room looked like before, here on an earlier post.
Sometimes when working on a space, it’s good to move everything out (or as much as you can) and re-imagine it the way you want it. So I started moving pieces out and then decided which pieces would have to stay. In my case, it was the sectional, a Mid-Century Modern cabinet, another large display cabinet and a few vintage decor pieces. I wanted to keep the amount of seating we had before but with smaller scale items. Comfort was still key.
Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works. Steve Jobs
After deciding on the look and feel I wanted for the space it was time to start shopping. I signed up for the Beyond+ Membership. It gives you 20% off everything, plus free shipping for a whole year. It paid for itself with the first order.
I started shopping for the main pieces. I knew I wanted lots of white to brighten up the space, family friendly fabrics, pops of metallic and of course some signature vintage pieces! 😉
I searched for a pair of matching chairs that would be comfortable, modern, sleek and stylish! I wanted something to fit our seating needs but have a totally different look. I found them. I love the lines, the color and they are super comfortable to kick back, put your feet up and watch TV.
Check out the design of these chairs. Modern with a touch of Mid Century style…yet super comfortable. By getting matching chairs with a smaller footprint the room looked bigger almost immediately.
I have always loved the Mid-Century Modern Tulip tables. When I saw this oval shaped one, I knew it was “the one”. With the large sectional I usually have a rectangular shaped coffee table to fit the length of the sectional. The oval shape worked perfectly. It gave me the length I needed, with the clean, white, modern style I wanted.
I added a low profile, white media stand that works so well in the room. Funny how such a small change like swapping this low profile piece out with the existing one made this corner look so much bigger.
TIP #1: Look at the scale of your items in a space. The size and scale of a piece are just as important as the color and comfort!
With each additional pop of white, the room was feeling lighter and brighter. This media stand added to that touch of modern decor I wanted and the low profile opened up the space so much more.
So now that the major pieces were in, it was time to anchor the room with rugs, lighting, and accessories. I had no idea that BB&B had so much in the way of decor! I found everything from art, to table lamps to vintage pieces like my Antique Brick Molds. Note, most of the pieces you see here are from BB&B, however, some are vintage pieces I’ve collected over time and of course our infamous horse Jack. 😉 I’ll list sources at the end for you.
I’ve been on the hunt for these Antique Brick Molds for a while. This was the best deal I’ve ever found and the best part is they were in stock. Every time I did find them, they were already sold out. Also, I used my Beyond+ membership and got 20% off. If you’ve been looking for them, get them now…you won’t find a better deal! Promise!
Did you notice those stunning chrome and wood candle holders? Another BB&B find. They go so well in the space…a touch of modern, touch of rustic and paired with black tapers they look beautiful.
I added a variety of pillows to add texture and interest to the room from Mid Century Modern patterns to the jute fringe pillows from the Magnolia line. Yep another surprise, they sell Magnolia Home pieces…a lot of them!
I added some art that had a modern urban feel, pottery that evoked a handmade artisan look, and a variety of metallic pieces.
I love the simple black and white artwork, black metal vases and the charcoal planter against all the white. Jack the horse took a break for this shot! 😉 What do you think of those fringe full pillows? Another Magnolia Home find!
I really wanted to find some unique decor pieces to add to that “collected” look.
On the other side of the room, I added what has quickly become a favorite table lamp, a faux cowhide ottoman and some more accessories. The table was a DIY by Mr. BeesNBurlap and myself. The vintage doors and chandelier were 2 pieces that were definitely staying in the space.
The glass lamp base, burlap shade, bronze oversize bowls, and the vintage seeder all add so much character to this corner.
TIP #2 Adding a variety of textures, styles, and materials to a space adds depth and makes it feel like it was collected over time.
This carved heavy wood piece is so cool. It’s a replica of an antique seeder. Who knew you could find something like this on BB&B? 🙂
One of my favorite pieces is this rustic teak wood table with amazing detail. Perfect for a side table and contrasts the cool modern chairs so well. I added a concrete planter and these sycamore branches from my favorite online floral shop Afloral. All in all the perfect combination!
I can’t forget to mention these rugs. I layered this beautiful cream edged jute rug with this incredibly soft sheepskin rug. It’s truly as soft as it looks!!! I think I need a few more!
So what do you think? I love this room so much more now. It looks so much bigger, has such a great eclectic, modern feel with a mix of vintage and urban decor! All the white that has been added in the space definitely makes it look brighter and lighter and I love the pop of patterns and textures!
If you’re ready for a new look, want to try a new style…remember you don’t need to buy a whole new room! Key pieces, a variety of accessories and layers of texture will do the trick! I’ve listed links to all the items shown here from Bed Bath & Beyond. Be sure to check them out for yourself and see the amazing selection they have!
