Kitchen Makeover ORC Update, Week 4
Well, it’s week 4 of the One Room Challenge and that means it’s time for an update on our Kitchen Reno. While I’m incredibly anxious to get it all done, I’m happy with the progress so far. As I was looking through my “to do” list there are quite a few “to do’s” that have been “done.” 🙂
I am happy to say the painting of the kitchen cabinets is complete and I couldn’t be happier. The Benjamin Moore paint and primer we used looks amazing. Even the painter said he was was impressed with how well these products worked. He usually uses another brand, but I insisted on using the Ben Moore paint because of all the research I did and the reviews I read. I was told that even after they seem dry, we should let them “cure” for another 1-2 weeks. So I have parts and pieces of cabinets all over the kitchen and dining area still, patiently waiting. We did paint the cabinets on the hinges and I will do a full blog post down the road as to how we did it and how well it worked!
So let’s run through the To-Do List and see where we are:
1. Remove a few cabinets and open up the kitchen. This also means organizing and decluttering the cabinets. I should get extra points for this alone! 🙂
2. Paint the cabinets. Oh boy!
3. Add tile, notice I’m not saying where because I really want a little bit of surprise left.
4. Change out the light fixture over the island and possibly over the dining table. Add new light fixtures in the kitchen area.
5. Buy new hardware and “change” existing hardware on both the island and all the cabinets.
6. DIY a kitchen cart for storage and rearrange the layout of the dining area.
7. Add a colorful element of surprise to the cabinets.
8. Find a new rug for the kitchen that will work with the new color scheme.
9. Finally decorating the new space! Shopping the house, and buying a few new pieces.
All in all, not too bad for week 4. This next week I’m going to rely on my incredibly talented husband, a.k.a the Light Installer Extraordinaire!
Here is a peek at the rug I recently got from Overstock. I used credits, reward points and a coupon. You won’t believe what I paid for this one. 🙂
I found the most perfect hardware at Hobby Lobby and bought it for 50% off. I had to put in an order for more as I cleaned out their current inventory. I also have to figure out how to shorten them because they are just a little long for the cabinets. Where there is a will there is a way. I told my husband, these HAVE to work! I just love them!
I also picked up a little something for the cabinet project I want to do…what do you think?
So, all in all I think we are doing ok as far as schedule. My goal this week will be lighting. The final stage will be reassembling the cabinets and hardware and accessorizing it…my favorite part!!!
Thanks for keeping up with me each week and encouraging me. I hope that this project inspires you in some way. You don’t need to break the bank to get the look you love. It takes some creativity, thrifty shopping and some good old elbow grease….yours, your family and your friends! 🙂
Be sure to keep up with me on Instagram for more inspiring photos. Also, you can view the other participants of the ORC challenge here
Have a good one!

You’re making great progress Holli!!! I can’t wait to see the finished space!! The hardware & rug are beautiful. What is the mesh-like stuff you shared for the cabinet project? I have a need for something similar for a vintage cabinet in our bedroom?

Thanks Heidi. It’s a heavy craft paper. Isn’t it cool? I’ve got so much to show but am trying to leave some surprises. I’ll let you know if the paper works the way I want it too. 😊
