Kitchen Makeover ORC Week 5 Update
It’s week 5 of the One Room Challenge and I can’t believe how much our kitchen has changed. We have done a little demo, a lot of painting, some tiling, and some style changes. I love it!!
Overall, we are in good shape as far as the “To Do” list. Thank goodness because I’ve been sick and I have lost four days of time I really could have used. I’m just hoping my Master Electrician (aka Mr. Beesnburlap) doesn’t get it because I really need his help to get the final lighting up.
Here is a shot of the light we put over the island. I had a smaller chandelier up before. While I loved it, it was just too small and I wanted a different color. I was able to buy this from an older lady that had two. I always admired hers when I’d visit and said, “If you ever want to sell that let me know.” Surprisingly she said…”I have another one in a box somewhere.” Score!! I got a great deal, helped a sweet lady out and had quite the puzzle to do putting it together with my daughter!! Here she is though in all her shiny glory!
I was trying to put a pop of color/interest inside the cabinets and what I bought wasn’t enough Pop!! So whether or not I feel better, I’m going to hit the stores this weekend and find something.
Also, on my list is a couple of accessories. I’ve been shopping my house and I probably have everything I need. I just feel like I need one more statement piece. I have been to all my favorite stores and nothing yet. Maybe the retail world is trying to say “Use what you have”, or that could be my husband I hear. 🙂 Once the clutter is cleared in the kitchen I’ll get a better idea of what I need.
We have had a couple of bumps along the way, one being the hardware. I got these awesome knobs from Hobby Lobby, I knew they had to be good because my whole family loved them. I was excited and went to put them on and of course, it couldn’t be that easy. The stems for the knobs were way too long. What’s a girl to do? I went to Lowes, bought a small hacksaw and got to work.
Here is a tip…place the stem on a thick cutting board, turn on the music and get comfortable. This is a tedious and time-consuming job but in the end worth it to have what you want. I also filed the new edge down to make it smoother.
So let’s run through the To-Do List and see where we are this week:
1. Remove a few cabinets and open up the kitchen. This also means organizing and decluttering the cabinets. I should get extra points for this alone! 🙂
2. Paint the cabinets. Oh boy!
3. Add tile, notice I’m not saying where because I really want a little bit of surprise left.
4. Change out the light fixture over the island and possibly over the dining table {HERE, NEED TO BE INSTALLED}. Add new light fixtures in the kitchen area.
5. Buy new hardware and “change” existing hardware on both the island and all the cabinets.
6. DIY a kitchen cart for storage and rearrange the layout of the dining area.
7. Add a colorful element of surprise to the cabinets.
8. Find a new rug for the kitchen that will work with the new color scheme.
9. Finally decorating the new space! Shopping the house, and buying a few new pieces. {IN PROCESS}
So are you curious what lights still need to be hung? Ok, I’m dying to show you. I found the perfect lights at Lamps Plus, they were just the right ones to balance out what I had already bought and worked with my “Vintage/Industrial/Farmhouse” look. What do you think??? Gorgeous right. I can’t wait to get them hung. I will also be posting detailed sources with item numbers on the kitchen reveal blog next week.
Well, all in all I’m very happy with how great this makeover is turning out. Again, I want to stress that we are not spending a lot. I’m hoping to inspire you with some of the things I’ve done. The goal was to create a kitchen that reflects my style more and absolutely on a budget. So far so good. I can’t wait to show you the whole space next week. Keep up with me on Instagram and be sure to follow all the ORC participants here for more inspiration!! Thanks again to Linda at Calling It Home for allowing me and so many others to join in!!
See you next week!!
